Research support for outdoor play

There are many studies that have been conducted over the past 60 or more years that have supported the benefits of children being engaged in regular outdoor play.  Julie Ernst, from UMD recently spoke at an Institute of Child Development Bag Lunch on her expanding research on nature-based programs for young children.  A recent study of hers out of the University of Minnesota Duluth found that there are significant benefits for children’s physical development when they are enrolled in schools that prioritize outdoor play.  Here is a link to the journal and here is a link to more information from her ongoing research.

In order to best enjoy the fall, we recommend beginning to layer outdoor clothing so it can be changed throughout the day as our temperatures fluctuate.  Please be sure to label all of your child’s clothing, including shoes, socks, hats, etc. so we can get it back to the appropriate home. Please send rain gear anytime rain is predicted, we will go outdoors as long as there are no dangerous conditions such as thunder, lightning or excessive winds.
