Staff Spotlights: Hannah Bruhn and Tammy Villegas

Meet Hannah Bruhn, Infant and Toddler Teacher

Hi, I’m Hannah! I’ve been working at CDLS since 2018 when I started as a student worker. After graduating in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, I moved into a floating assistant teacher position at the center before transitioning to a full-time position as one of the B3 assistant teachers. I love being able to build relationships with all of the children at the center and helping them realize they are capable of so much more than they even realize. It is amazing to get to show young children parts of the world they haven’t experienced yet.

When not at work, I watch way too much Great British Bake Off and try out overly complicated baking recipes just to see if I can make it. I recently taught myself how to knit and am currently rehearsing to perform with an orchestra that plays soundtracks alongside silent movies. One thing that a lot of people don’t know about me is that I’m a licensed EMT.

Q & A with Tammy Villegas, Outreach Coordinator

How did you get into the field?

Tamara Villegas and her granddaughter stand on a dock on a lake holding a fishing pole. Both wear glasses and are smiling at the camera

TV: I got into the field by accident but I am so fortunate that I did. When my sons entered preschool, I had three out of the four of them enrolled at the same school all at the same time, and all my time was spent there anyway so it was a very logical and an obvious choice. They were active and loved being outside, and it was perfect for our family and values.

What keeps you in this field?

I love the outdoors and I believe in teaching children early about the beauty of the outdoors and how to be good outdoor stewards in a way that is developmentally appropriate for them, and to start teaching them that the plants, insects, and animals are all our relatives.

What do you love about CDLS?

My absolute favorite time of the day is when I get to say “See you tomorrow!” when children go home for the day, and help the little ones practice their waves on their cart rides throughout the day. I also enjoy all of the events that I get to be involved with and help plan with the families and other staff. It is a highlight to see the entire community come together and enjoy hot cocoa at the bonfire or watch the children dance with their teddy bears at the Spring Event. We have a very fun and active community and there is never an issue when I put out an ask for volunteers—I have an abundance of help! Such an amazing group of parents, children, and other staff that I am fortunate to work with here at CDLS.

What is your favorite season?

I am torn between either the planting or harvest season. I love everything about growing food, saving seeds, and providing for our family sustainably in whatever way possible. I especially love skipping the produce section of the grocery section if our garden has produced enough. I also love to share what we grow with friends and family.

What are your favorite activities with children?

I love fishing, gardening, and seed-saving with children. As a young child, my dad taught me how to fish, making sure that I was able to tie knots, put on worms, and take the fish off the hook. I love showing children that they can do this themselves as well as teaching conservation and fish safety if they are catch and releasing.
